HK7 RESETTING TO MUSIC FESTIVAL (7th festival, 2006)

The competition consists of creating and cutting a new sound track over old films taken from the silent film era. The ideas behind this initiative are to integrate sound and image, discover new resetters to music and rediscover films that are otherwise destined to be forgotten.

organization details

  • The festival will take place at the Teatro Cristallo, Via Dalmazia, 30 in Bolzano from 10th to 18th of november 2006.
  • Finalists in the official competition will be screened, along with other films out of competition. At the end of the proceedings there will be a live resetting to music.
  • Prizes:
    • Cash prize:
      Can be given to competition entries of any length and cut to any musical genre and/or soundtrack, even non-original.

    • Ermitage Prize:
      The three best re-workings of the soundtracks for the titles indicated in part 3b (participation conditions), with original music and audio effects, will be released by the Bologna based Ermitage publishing company (www.ermitage.it) during 2007. The DVDs will contain information about the author of the new soundtrack, plus details about the festival. This prize can be combined with other awards.
    • The Harlock Prize:
      Will be presented to a reset to music film with the best original soundtrack. The use of non-original tracks must not exceed 20% of the total music. This prize gives the opportunity of making a CD of the musical tracks and the production of 500 copies. For the non-original tracks, the eventual winner will be expected to modify them.

    NB: In the case when the jury cannot decide on a deserving winner, it is possible that the price will not be given. Should this happen, the cash price will be divided.
    The awarding of the prize is bound to the attendance of the winners or their delegates at t h e prize-giving evening . Alternatively, requests can be made for the provision of a video message (a short, self-produced statement on digital, about the original film and participation at the festival) or a video/audio conference call.


  • The films that participate in the festival are placed in Circuito which is published on the festival web site and are available to cultural promoters who can then show one or more resettings to music in their own towns using screenings or live resetting to music. TV interviews are also possible.
    The submitted tapes will be stored in an internal archive of both the Harlock association and CAB.
  • The film entries will be closely examined for the following juries:
    • Technical quality
    • Artistic quality
    • Deciding Jury


    The juries’ decision is final.


how to take part

  • The competition is open to the resetters, filmmakers, musicians (and of course open to anyone) of all nationalities.
  • All the admitted films and cartoons have to belong to the silent film era and integrated in the montage. Whatever length is accepted. Whatever kind of soundtrack either original or non-original is allowed (noise tracks included). Works can either be philological or ironic and desecrating. Manipulation of the original montage and extracts are not allowed.
    To participate in the first selection, entries have to be submitted in VHS PAL (or DVD) by July 15, 2006. The author must pay shipping expenses for the submission. These copies submitted for the first selection are not sent back: they are kept in the internal archive of the Association and included in the Cultural Circuit. If a film passes this selection, the Festival Management will ask the author – or their delegate - to send in the original copy for the screening (Betacam or DVD) to be received by the deadline of October 15, 2006, to enable the Festival Management to carry out the necessary technical tests for the screening and to allow the jury to see the works in the best conditions possible. The screenings take place in video only. The author must pay shipping expenses for the submission of the original copies needed for the screening; the Festival Management will pay for the return of the original copies and for their insurance limited to the days of their stay at the Festival.

    The three best re-workings of these titles can win the Ermitage prize. Details in part 2c of this regulation.
  • Entry to the competition is absolutely free.
  • The deadline for entries (the postmark is considered as proof) is July 15, 2006. After delivery, the Festival Management will send an e-mail or phone the entrants. Films must be sent together with the entry form available online at the festival’s website, to be completed, printed and signed and sent with other publicity material for the film. At least two photos/stills from the film also have to be included.

    Using the Poste Italiane postal system for dispatches from Italy (though only using priority or registered post - prioritaria o raccomandata) or using a courier service. NB. Detail must reach us both on paper and either on floppy disk, CD-R or e-mail.


commitment statement

  • In respecting the privacy law (italian Law 196/03), Harlock does not give personal information o f the festival entrants to a third party.
  • All entrants are invited to Bolzano (at their own expense) to take part in the screening of the selected works. The entrant along with two companions can enter for free.
    The winners, who are asked to fully participate in the prize giving evening, according to the terms laid out in part 2C, will be given the use of a double room in one of the town’s hotels and will be paid by our association. Travel expenses must be covered by the entrant themselves apart from very particular exceptions.
  • The tapes sent to Harlock will be stored in the association archive and brought out on the cultural circuit. The entrants must provide their own tax number/ Codice Fiscale and if they are members of the SIAE, they must indicate their own SIAE number.
  • However, Harlock undertakes the responsibility of informing the entrants a long time in advance of any use of the works in question (also when repeatedly broadcast on TV) as well as guaranteeing the work’s security against commercial exploitation (the dialogue, subject etc) without asking the author’s permission first.
  • Harlock is also committed to complete clarity and seriousness particularly when ommunicating information to the participants. The association does not make ambiguous statements about the contest and always provides constant and timely information to the participants as much as possible.

The Festival Management reserves the right to change part of this application procedure subject to the changes being published on the official website of the Festival.
